Before his death, Guru Amardas appointed jetha as his successor and gave him the name, Guru Ramdas. He did this after putting both his sons in law through trial. Since bother were pious , people wondered
who would make the next Guru out of the two.
One da Guru Amardas ji Came to the place where the bawli was being constructed. He asked Sri ram and Sri Ramdas to erect a platform each. When the Plaftorms were ready, the guru ji rejected them and ordered a new ones to be made. Sir Ram demolished his reluctantly while Sri ramdas ji Brought down without a word. This process of rejection and reconstruction carried on several times. Sri ram ran out of patience and questioned the Guru ji irritably as to what was wrong with the platform while Sri Ramdas fell at the Guru’s feet and confessed that he had failed to understand his Guru’s orders. He Added that he would try once again in the hope of succeeding in carrying out the assignment.
Guru Amardas Embraced him and declared him the successful candidate for the Guruship. He called his sons and his principal sikhs and Addressed them thus: ” Guru Nanak made the rule that guruship should go to the best person. I have fround Sri Ramdas to be the most worthy pon whom I Bestow Guruship.”
